Who we are

Basin Electric Power Cooperative is a consumer-owned, regional wholesale electricity supplier headquartered in Bismarck, North Dakota. Our history as an electric cooperative is rooted in the beginnings of the electrification of rural America. As a cooperative and as your Touchstone Energy partner, we proudly adhere to the seven cooperative principles.
The pride we have in our work is evident in our vision statement: Basin Electric will provide best-in-class, cost-effective wholesale energy, along with products and services that support and unite rural America.
What we do
-
Basin Electric owns 2,499 megawatts (MW) of electricity generating capacity and operates power plants with a total capacity of 3,412 MW in North Dakota, Wyoming and South Dakota. Our plants are among the cleanest coal-based plants in the nation.
-
We serve 120 rural electric member cooperative systems that in turn serve approximately 1.8 million consumers in the nine states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado and New Mexico.
-
We have two major subsidiaries: Dakota Gasification Co. and Dakota Coal Co. Dakota Gasification Co. owns the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, which is the only commercial-scale coal gasification plant in the United States that manufactures natural gas.
